Alvaro Del Norte

Alvaro Del Norte is a singer, accordionist, and songwriter for the Tex-Mex punk band Piñata Protest.

Originally born in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, Mexico, Alvaro and his family immigrated to the United States of America as a child and grew up experiencing the life of an undocumented immigrant. While in middle school, Alvaro started playing the trumpet. While was in high school, he discovered punk rock and became inspired to picked up the electric guitar and bass which he played in several bands. Alvaro later graduated from The University Of Texas in San Antonio in 2008.

During his time attending the university, Alvaro formed Piñata Protest, the band known for their combination of punk rock with the Tex-Mex sounds of the diatonic button accordion. Piñata Protest quickly made a reputation for themselves with their energetic live shows and eclectic sounds that ignited crowds to both mosh and dance with their partners in the traditional conjunto fashion all within the same dance floor.

For a little over ten years the quartet has maintained a busy schedule of performing and touring throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico with a wide range of musical acts such as The Reverend Horton Heat, Mariachi El Bronx, Molotov, Guttermouth, The Toadies, Ramon Ayala, The Blasters, The Casualties, Brujeria, Mustard Plug, Ozomatli, Voodoo Glow Skulls, Agent Orange, The Coffin Kats, Authority Zero, Wayne Hancock, and Girl In A Coma.

The band has had official appearances at SXSW, Dia De Los Toadies, Sound On Sound Fest, the 2015 Latin BMI Awards, and National Public Radio. Notably, the band released their album 'El Valiente' at #7 on the Latin Billboard charts. The band has been featured in several graduate level academic research papers, books, and soundtracks for the following films: Me Estas Matando Susana (2016), La Soldera (2015), Circus Of The Dead (2014).

In 2014 the independent beer brewer Freetail Brewing released Piñata Protest beer which was distributed in grocery chains, bars, and venues across Texas.
